A report about employment standard

The session that was held in Linc 4 classroom yesterday opened a new door on employment standard for us, a crowd of newcomers. This included mainly two parts, one of which is about a safe and comfortable workplace. There are several methods for the employee to ask a help while they are injured on job. After calling 911 and reporting to the manager, the employee can report the union and etc., and ask a leave with pay. The second part involves work time and payroll, which grabbed the audience tightly. Even if the salary gaps exist among different industries, that the minimum salary is 11 dollars per hour on Ontario, and the student is paid 10.5 dollars at least is ruled by law. In the event that the employee works beyond 44 hours a week, that means the overtime salary should be paid. Normally it is one and a half time more than regular salary per hour. Moreover, there are some deductions to the salary, including the income tax, the EI and so on. In a word, this session provided us a amount of useful information on workplace.

comparision of the two presentations

Both of the speakers expressed their opinions clearly, fluently and with different styles. The former described every word written on the board step by step; however, the latter explained how to use a story to let the audience know the speaker's idea. In contrast to the first speaker, the second one is more humorous, more attractive and more energetic. He has applied a lot body language techniques and has interacted with the audience. I am deeply impressed by this sentence "Your dream is not for sale", which is emphasized in his presentation. Certainly, it is not easy for us to explain those words used in the first presentation through telling a story. Therefore, a successful presentation means not to describe the topic completely, rather than to make it more attractive, and persuasive.

Listening task

Lon: What’s this?

Abigail: It’s a memo about a safety inspection  scheduled for next week.

Lon: A safety inspection? How are we ever going to pass a safety inspection?

Abigail: What do you mean? This isn’t an unsafe workplace. We’ve had a good record. None of our employees have had on the job injuries this year and we’ve never had a fatality. I don’t understand why you’re so worried.

Lon: From what I’ve heard, the inspectors don’t just look at injury rates. They look for the smallest hazard that may be remotely dangerous If we get cited, we may be shut down.

Abigail: With all due respect, I don’t think that’s how it works. Yes, the inspector will look at our work environment and our gear and machinery to make sure there are no hazards or toxic substances.

Lon: That’s what I’m worried about.

Abigail: But, if they find a variation, we’ll get a chance to fix the problem. They won’t shut us down without giving us a chance  to comply with their  safety rules.

Lon: I sure hope you’re right.

Abigail: Me, too. We’ll know after next week’s inspection.

Your previous country’s geography and Canada’s geography

China and Canada lie in different time zones and different latitudes, which influence their respective geography substantially. It is well known that Canada is located more north, and it has colder weather, and the different time zone compare to China.
First of all, Canada has massive amount of snow and ice that covers its north land till north pole
So, it is an interesting thing that Canada's government sets up specific offices to accept the mails sent to Santa before Christmas every year. On the another hand, the shape of the southern Canada looks like U-shape that consists of  a large area of prairie in the southern central provinces, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Rocky Mountains is one of the most famous attractions in the western Canada and in the east, there are more mountains. In contrast, China's land is much more diverse than Canada's, and the earlier is covered with mountains, plains, basin and so on. People also can feel the difference among the four seasons obviously in most areas of China because of the lower latitude.
To sum up, China will attract people's attentions by its several fields' patterns; however, Canada will grab people's attentions by its fabulous snowy and icy kingdom in this world.

About women's right

This video introduced the history of women vote in Canada. Women in Manitoba gained the right to vote in 1915, which is the first province, then On and BC became the second group to get the women right to vote. The First World War pushed the people to realize the importance of women's right to vote. But until 1960, women in Canada gained the right to vote completely.

A journey to MCC

Small Business Forum held in Metro Convention Center aims to help the starters to set up and develop their own business in Canada. This forum involves not only the financing and the online sale, but also the water supply and cable service, all of which is useful for us to widen our fields of view and provide a professional route to build our own business.
Canada is a multicultural country with different customs, foods and behaviors. Therefore, that was an extraordinary journey for me to have a western lunch in Jack Astor's after the gather in MCC, especially to achieve to order a delicious western food for myself. The traditional meals such as the steaks and the burgers were the most two popular dishes on our table, but how much maturity of the roasted loin is appropriate for us to chew was a challenging task for these who are not familiar with the western dishes. Certainly, everything would be solved with a open mind after our teacher's guides and explanations.
What is more, That was my first time to enjoy my lunch under a special heater in  that garden, which looks like a hollow pole with a small umbrella at the top. In sum, I had a fantastic trip  and a lot of fun today!

mayor candidates' background

It is undoubted that a leader's style  plays an important role to a city's development. Three mayoral candidates are outstanding in the list, whose names are Olivia Chow, John Tory and Doug Ford.
Before the announcements on the ideas in Toronto are made by these candidates, and before the important vote is done, the background of candidates is primary, and will impact voters to decide who is appropriate to be a mayor, and beneficial to themselves.

The answer to Monday's assignment

Let me try to image one part of an interview in Canada!
A collaborative task is an effective tool to evaluate the interviewees' values that will bring the future cash flow to the company. It should be an embarrassment for participators to make an unsatisfied decision, and it is also not wise to show aggressive style in this part.
So, what is the important factors for the interviewer to judge you is the communication skills, the attitudes to different customs and the promptness to diversity. If people are quite oblivious of these primary elements, that’s say, they are minimizing the opportunities to be hired.
