A report about employment standard

The session that was held in Linc 4 classroom yesterday opened a new door on employment standard for us, a crowd of newcomers. This included mainly two parts, one of which is about a safe and comfortable workplace. There are several methods for the employee to ask a help while they are injured on job. After calling 911 and reporting to the manager, the employee can report the union and etc., and ask a leave with pay. The second part involves work time and payroll, which grabbed the audience tightly. Even if the salary gaps exist among different industries, that the minimum salary is 11 dollars per hour on Ontario, and the student is paid 10.5 dollars at least is ruled by law. In the event that the employee works beyond 44 hours a week, that means the overtime salary should be paid. Normally it is one and a half time more than regular salary per hour. Moreover, there are some deductions to the salary, including the income tax, the EI and so on. In a word, this session provided us a amount of useful information on workplace.

comparision of the two presentations

Both of the speakers expressed their opinions clearly, fluently and with different styles. The former described every word written on the board step by step; however, the latter explained how to use a story to let the audience know the speaker's idea. In contrast to the first speaker, the second one is more humorous, more attractive and more energetic. He has applied a lot body language techniques and has interacted with the audience. I am deeply impressed by this sentence "Your dream is not for sale", which is emphasized in his presentation. Certainly, it is not easy for us to explain those words used in the first presentation through telling a story. Therefore, a successful presentation means not to describe the topic completely, rather than to make it more attractive, and persuasive.

Listening task

Lon: What’s this?

Abigail: It’s a memo about a safety inspection  scheduled for next week.

Lon: A safety inspection? How are we ever going to pass a safety inspection?

Abigail: What do you mean? This isn’t an unsafe workplace. We’ve had a good record. None of our employees have had on the job injuries this year and we’ve never had a fatality. I don’t understand why you’re so worried.

Lon: From what I’ve heard, the inspectors don’t just look at injury rates. They look for the smallest hazard that may be remotely dangerous If we get cited, we may be shut down.

Abigail: With all due respect, I don’t think that’s how it works. Yes, the inspector will look at our work environment and our gear and machinery to make sure there are no hazards or toxic substances.

Lon: That’s what I’m worried about.

Abigail: But, if they find a variation, we’ll get a chance to fix the problem. They won’t shut us down without giving us a chance  to comply with their  safety rules.

Lon: I sure hope you’re right.

Abigail: Me, too. We’ll know after next week’s inspection.
